SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- An 18-year-old man who was shot dead near Chicano Park Sunday has been identified by authorities.

On Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department confirmed National City resident Juan Carlos Porter was the victim in this incident, which took place on the south on-ramp of the 5 freeway from Logan Avenue.

As explained by police, a vehicle containing several men pulled into Paradise Valley Hospital around 2:10 a.m. The group flagged down an officer who was at the hospital on an unrelated call, and directed the officer to the victim who had been shot.

Porter was then rushed into the hospital and CPR was initiated, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Due to the location where the shooting occurred, California Highway Patrol assumed initial responsibility for the investigation. It was later determined that the shots were likely fired from the area of Chicano Park, police said. That's when the department's homicide detectives were also called to the scene.

At this point in the investigation, police have confirmed that officers located multiple cartridge casings and a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire several times in the area of Chicano Park. Detectives are now trying to interview potential witnesses and have been canvassing the area for surveillance footage.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or who may have security footage in the area is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
