ATLANTA, GA, September 02, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — This September, during Hunger Action Month, the Atlanta Community Food Bank is joining the nationwide Feeding America network in calling on Georgians to Play Your Part. As the pressure surrounding housing, health care, and grocery costs compounds, and SNAP eligibility changes produce additional strain on households already stretched thin, everyone can take action to help ensure their neighbors have access to the food they need to thrive.
The Food Bank, the central logistics hub for a 29-county region, is serving more neighbors than at any point in its history—70% more than it did in 2022. According to Feeding America’s most recent Map the Meal Gap study, more than 900,000 people, including more than 293,000 children, experienced food insecurity across metro Atlanta and north Georgia in 2024. That is 1 in 7 neighbors.
More than 100,000 Georgians, close to 40% of them children, have lost SNAP benefits under changes enacted last year, with further reductions potentially taking effect this fall. More than 68% of people facing hunger in the 29-county area served by the Food Bank may not qualify for SNAP, up from 62% in 2023. Forty percent of food-insecure children may not qualify for food assistance programs, up from 31%.
“The majority of the neighbors we serve are working. More than two-thirds of our neighbors facing hunger earn too much to qualify for SNAP and too little to cover groceries once rent, gas, and health care are paid,” said Kyle Waide, president and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. “That gap is where the Food Bank lives, and it is growing. During Hunger Action Month, we encourage the community to give, volunteer, and speak up, and join us in our work to help close that gap.”
How to play your part and take action this September:
• Give. Every dollar donated to the Food Bank during the month of September will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. $1 will provide up to 6 meals. Gifts can be made at Donate | Atlanta Community Food Bank.
• Volunteer. Sign up for a volunteer shift to sort and package food at the Food Bank’s East Point headquarters or at one of their Community Food Centers in Jonesboro, Stone Mountain, Marietta and Atlanta. Available shifts are listed at acfb.org/volunteer.
• 30 Ways in 30 Days Challenge. Throughout September, the Food Bank is promoting a 30 Ways in 30 Days challenge on social media, raising awareness about food insecurity and offering daily suggestions for actions people can take to fight hunger.
• Go orange. Orange is the color of hunger relief. The Food Bank encourages everyone to wear it throughout the month—a shirt, a hat, a ribbon, or favorite piece of apparel—to show your support.

About Atlanta Community Food Bank
The Atlanta Community Food Bank works to end hunger with the food, people, and big ideas needed to ensure our neighbors have the nourishment to lead healthy and productive lives. Far too many people in our own community experience hunger every day. Through more than 700 community-based, nonprofit partners in 29 counties, we help thousands of families, children, and seniors get healthy food every year. Our goal is that all hungry people across metro Atlanta and north Georgia will have access to the nutritious meals they need when they need them. It takes the power of our whole community to make that possible. In 2023, the Atlanta Community Food Bank distributed its one billionth meal. Join us at ACFB.org.
