Chicano Federation Supports Jan. 22 Flood Victims at Chavez Day of Service

The Chicano Federation hosted their annual Cesar Chavez Day of Service Saturday to honor the legacy of the late activist for farm workers through community service.
This year, and thanks to the support of the community, the organization provided resources, services, clothes, and daily essentials to over 75 families affected by the Jan. 22 flood.
The event took place at the Ramada hotel in National City, where many families are lodged while they wait to return home. The federation also connected with the families to discover their most urgent needs.
The federation owns eight buildings that provide affordable housing. One, the Delta Apartments, was severely damaged by the flood, and 25 families, including babies and seniors, were immediately evacuated and placed in hotels.
Since then, the federation has been offering assistance while working to reconstruct the damaged properties.
“The road to recovery from the devastation that we all witnessed is long and our families need to have access to resources and support so that they can come back stronger than before,” Liz Ramírez, CEO of the Chicano Federation, said.
One of the participants, a woman, said she was going through “trying times,” but expressed thanks to those that have provided help, adding that when she is able, she wants “to get involved with them and give back for all the support they have given us.”
