Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a 42-year-old man who suffered a fatal fall this week on a cliffside trail above Black’s Beach.

Jose Santoyo of San Diego apparently lost his footing while hiking down the sea bluff off the 2800 block of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive with friends on Tuesday afternoon, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Santoyo fell about 10 feet onto a cliff below, the agency reported.

His companions made a 911 call and tried to revive him prior to the arrival of paramedics, who took over the lifesaving efforts before pronouncing Santoyo dead at the scene at about 3:45 p.m., the medical examiner reported.
