Wrong-way crash in San Marcos sends multiple people to the hospital

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Multiple people were taken to the hospital Sunday night after a wrong-way crash in San Marcos, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded to the crash at South Santa Fe Avenue and North Rancho Santa Fe Road around 8 p.m. Sunday. According to SDSO, witnesses called 911 reporting a wrong-way driver in an SUV, which collided head-on with another SUV and a car.

Deputies report a 24-year-old man and 22-year-old woman in the SUV that was hit were taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries and reported broken bones, and an infant in a car seat was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The driver of the car was not injured.

Deputies say the wrong-way driver, only identified as a 29-year-old male, was taken to the hospital with major, but non-life-threatening injuries.

In a post on X just before 9 p.m. Sunday, SDSO said San Marcos deputies have closed down S. Santa Fe Ave between N. Rancho Sante Fe Rd and S. Las Flores Dr. due to the multi-vehicle crash.

An investigation is underway into the cause and whether DUI was a factor in the crash.
