SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Imagine staying the night in a cottage above the ocean: you can do exactly that at the historic Crystal Pier Hotel in Pacific Beach.

The popular vacation spot, located at 4500 Ocean Blvd., features cottages that sit on the Crystal Pier.

Inside the cottages and suites, guests have access to fully equipped kitchenettes, separate bedrooms and living rooms, private decks over the beach and a parking spot for one car.

The pier offers views of surfers riding waves, fishers fishing, beachgoers strolling the sand, breathtaking sunsets and the boardwalk of Pacific Beach.

The Crystal Pier, which began construction in the early 1920s, was originally known as Pickering's Pleasure Pier. During its history, the pier was home to carnival-like attractions and a ballroom -- both lasting for only a few months.

Then in 1930, the cottages were built on the pier, giving guests what the hotel calls a "sleeping over the ocean" experience.

If you want to book a room now, rates range between $225 to $600 per night. Reservations have to be booked four to six months in advance for the winter months and 11 months for summer.

No smoking and no pets are allowed at the hotel.

Crystal Pier closes to the public at 7 p.m., while hotel guests have access to it at all times.
