Alaska Airlines announces intent to add flight from San Diego to Washington, D.C.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- On Wednesday, Alaska Airlines announced it intends to apply for one of five slots for service from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C.

The Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, approved on Wednesday, allowed the addition of five new flights to DCA.

Alaska Airlines said it plans to apply to the U.S. Department of Transportation for nonstop service between San Diego and the nation's capital. It currently has nonstop service from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

 “The San Diego region has waited for a very long time for an opportunity to restore nonstop air service to Reagan National Airport,” said Kim Becker, the president and CEO of SAN.

The bill now heads to President Joe Biden's desk for his signature.
