Alex Morgan calls retirement 'the right decision at this time'
San Diego Wave FC soccer star Alex Morgan on Friday held her retirement press conference, revealing when she thought about leaving the beautiful game.
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego Wave FC soccer star Alex Morgan on Friday held her retirement press conference.
Morgan will play her final match Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium after a 15-year career in professional soccer.
She started to think about retiring from the beautiful game when finding out about her pregnancy a "few weeks ago."
"As unexpected as it was I was so happy because this is what our family wanted, a couple months sooner than expected, but nonetheless, we were very overjoyed," Morgan said during the press conference.
The 35-year-old added that she felt the last couple of weeks she had "sort of lost a step in playing."
"I felt like for my body and my mind and my heart, this was the right decision at this time," Morgan said.
Morgan's accolades include two women's World Cup titles, an Olympic gold medal, an NWSL Championship, NWSL Shield, NWSL Challenge Cup and Champions League.
"If you see it, you can be it, and I think that's so important when it comes to investment in women's sports," Morgan said.
Morgan, who was named the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year in 2012 and 2018, recorded 123 goals (fifth all-time) and 53 assists (ninth all-time) in 224 matches playing on the international level.
Her final match with the club against North Carolina Courage will air on KUSI this Sunday at 5 p.m.
San Diego FC will also celebrate the career of Morgan during their final home match at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 3.
