City of La Mesa gets first HAWK pedestrian signal
The City of La Mesa has installed its first pedestrian beacon designed to help people safely cross busy streets, according to a release Tuesday.
LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The City of La Mesa has installed its first pedestrian beacon designed to help people safely cross busy streets, according to a release Tuesday.
The high-intensity activated crosswalk (HAWK) signal is located at the intersection of Jessie Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard.
It was activated last Thursday and is meant to notify pedestrians when it is safe to cross the street. The signal flashes yellow when activated by a pedestrian or bicyclist, telling drivers to slow down and prepare to stop. The light will then stop flashing and change to a solid yellow light before transitioning to a solid red light, indicating drivers should stop.
As a way to provide accessibility for pedestrians with disabilities, an audible message will play and the arrow button will start vibrating once the signal is activated.
This new HAWK signal is part of the city's Vision Zero Plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries resulting from road incidents.
