Free 'Dump Day' approaching, just in time for spring cleaning

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- It's spring cleaning time and Caltrans is hosting another free disposal event for those getting rid of household items.

The next "Dump Day' will be held on Saturday, April 20 at the Chula Vista Maintenance Yard, located at 570 C St. Everyone is welcomed to bring non-hazardous, unwanted items between 8 a.m. and noon, or until bins are full.

Caltrans said staff will be on-site to accept approved waste and debris free of charge.

There are, however, items that San Diegans are asked not to bring. This includes hazardous waste like batteries, paint, oils or flammables.

Other undesired items include e-waste like televisions, computers, microwaves, stereo equipment and electronics, or construction debris like concrete, dirt, asphalt and asbestos.

More information on prohibited items can be found here.

According to Caltrans, four mattresses and four tires separated from the rims will be accepted per household.

Motorists are encouraged to ensure their loads are properly secured ahead of traveling. Tarps are highly suggested. Caltrans said loads that are not tied down, enclosed, or secured may not be accepted.

This "Dump Day" is just one of many cleanup events led by Caltrans in an effort to keep San Diego County's roads and waterways free of litter -- all while boosting beautification efforts for public spaces in the California.
