SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — One person was killed in a stabbing next to a gas station in El Cerrito Friday afternoon, San Diego police confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI.

The incident was reported to police around 1:12 p.m. in the parking lot at 5975 University Ave. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

In an update Saturday, police said the victim and the suspect, both 33 years old, got into an argument before the stabbing. The suspect was at the gas station filling up his car when the victim reportedly ran up to the suspect from the parking lot and the altercation ensued.

Police said victim punched the suspect and they began physically fighting in the parking lot. At one point, the victim slammed the suspect to the ground and got on top of him punching him multiple times. From there, police said the suspect then stabbed the victim with a knife.

The two men separated at that point and the victim walked over to the gas station teller and sat down. Meanwhile, the suspect reportedly waited by his vehicle until police arrival.

Detectives believe the two men are acquainted with each other, although the exact nature of their relationship is still under investigation.
