Star basketball player Mikey Williams sentenced after shooting at his home in Jamul
Just two weeks before a jury trial was set to begin, Williams took a plea deal, dropping it to just one count of making a criminal threat.
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Just months before Mikey Williams was set to graduate high school and attend the University of Memphis on a basketball scholarship, he was arrested at his home in Jamul.
This happened after an argument with guests being asked to leave his home in March of last year.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, six people were driving away in a car when shots were fired. The car was hit by the bullets, but nobody was injured.
Williams was arrested in April of last year and initially faced nine felony counts.
But just two weeks before a jury trial was set to begin, Williams took a plea deal, dropping it to just one count of making a criminal threat.
After pleading guilty, he was ordered to complete anger management and gun safety courses along with 80 hours of community service by his sentencing on Monday.
That led to his charge being reduced to a misdemeanor.
His attorney credited the District Attorney’s Office.
"They took an understanding. They wanted to look at it to understand who Mikey Williams is, who he was before this incident, the types of things he's done and the quality and character of this young man,” Williams' attorney Randy Grossman said.
Williams is now on summary probation for a year, the lowest form of probation, and has a 10-year gun restriction placed on his record.
"All it really means is that he's to live an upstanding life as he's always done already and to violate no laws, again excluding minor traffic occasions or infractions for the next year and then after that he'll be off of probation,” Grossman said.
Williams' attorney says he withdrew from the University of Memphis and will start as a freshman at the University of Central Florida next week, attending classes and playing basketball.
