SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The U.S. women’s basketball team beat France 67-66 Sunday, with Poway native Kelsey Plum contributing 12 points in the gold medal victory.
The win marks the eighth straight Olympic gold medal for the red, white and blue home team, breaking a tie with the American men’s basketball team that won seven in a row from 1936-68.
When it comes to game stats, starter A'ja Wilson scored 21 points, while Kahleah Copper and local star Plum each scored 12 points off the bench. Other U.S. players who added to the scoreboard included Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Jackie Young.
The game came down to the wire with France's Gabby Williams sinking a last minute basket, though it only counted for two as her feet just inside the three-point line. Plum and teammate Stewart's reactions can be seen below right after the final basket was made.
This victory tallied Team USA with its 40th gold medal of the Paris Games, tying China for the most golds.
