NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- An early morning fire outside a National City shopping mall was sparked by a gas leak, officials say.
The blaze at Westfield Plaza Bonita broke out shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday, National City Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Hernandez told FOX 5/KUSI. The fire was burning in an area that was under construction, in front of the Nordstrom Rack and a new arcade and bowling alley.
Crews were working on a water line when they dug up a large gas line and the gas ignited, sparking flames, Hernandez said.
The fire did not jeopardize the mall's structure. Crews evacuated the mall and no one was injured, officials say.
San Diego Gas & Electric said service was expected to be restored to the commercial businesses impacted by 8 p.m.
