The forecast shows the first bout of spring showers may sweep the region this weekend, bringing with it gusty winds from a brewing Pacific storm.
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The forecast shows the first bout of spring showers may sweep the region this weekend, bringing with it gusty winds from a brewing Pacific storm.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday and Friday are expected to offer dry and mild weather before a low pressure system moves through, which will be accompanied by colder temperatures and scattered precipitation.
As explained by local meteorologists, the Pacific storm will pass through Saturday and into Sunday with periods of moderate rain expected west of the mountain areas with a few showers possibly reaching the lower deserts. The biggest impact, however, could be strong winds that NWS said will likely create blowing dust and sand.
Here's a look at peak wind gust predictions for the weekend:
The region's mountain areas, like Julian, Palomar and Mt. Laguna, could see snow Saturday night and Sunday as NWS predicts precipitation levels down to 4,500 feet.
San Diego County's coastal areas and valleys are also expected to receive moderate rainfall and wind in bursts throughout the weekend, as an atmospheric river gets drawn into Southern California.
Senior NOAA Meteorologist Alex Tardy said timing for precipitation begins Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, with scattered showers expected Sunday.
Looking ahead to Monday, cool temperatures are still expected as the the storm system leaves the region.
