SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Following a rising trend in gas prices at the start of April, pain at the pump seemed to ease for San Diegans just slightly last week, according to the latest data from AAA.
The average price for regular gas on April 29 was $5.35 per gallon, just five cents cheaper than California's average. It was two cents less than the previous week's average gas price. Last month, the average cost of regular gas was $5.14 per gallon.
Still, gas prices in San Diego remain higher than the same time a year ago. The gas prices at the end of the month were almost $0.50 more than last year's numbers, up nearly 9.5%. Last year, the average cost of regular gas was $4.90.
The good news is they are still lower than they were in 2022, when regular gas in San Diego averaged a historical $6.42 in October.
The cost of diesel was $5.27 at the end of April, also five cents less than the previous week but $0.15 more expensive than the same time last year. The record high for diesel hit $6.85 on June 18, 2022, according to AAA.
Last Thursday, AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said the national average price could already be at its peak until drivers prepare to travel for Memorial Day weekend and the hurricane season gets underway.
Statewide, as of Wednesday, the average price for regular gas is $5.39, which is slightly less than last week's average of $5.41. The highest average price recorded for a gallon of regular gas in California was $6.44 on June 14, 2022 and $7 for diesel on June 18, 2022.
